SOUTHEAST CONFERENCE – CLERGY:

J. Weston Jones
Serving: Emanuel, Marion

Congregational Service: Personal study of the issues; participation in synod seminars on issues before the upcoming convention; sharing with other clergy on the issues

Synodical or Churchwide Service: In 33 years of ministry I have served on the planning / hosting committee for the Constitutional Convention of the LCA – ALC merger. I have spoken / debated in synod sponsored events on the Concordats. I have served on the past Conflict Resolution committee for the synod, going into conflicted congregations at the synod’s request to help find solutions.

Community-Related Service: Past president of Marion Rotary; on local board that planned resurrection of an abandoned hotel for subsidized senior housing; Chamber of Commerce Ambassador; Marion General Hospital Foundation Board; Free Medical Clinic Board; WOSB-Marion Board

Personal Statement:
Why you are qualified and what particular gifts you possess for this position: I realize there are a number of emotionally charged and theologically complex issues before the church at this time. I believe I can bring a compassionate, biblically-based ear to these discussions and vote with courage. I will also be seeking prayerful direction from God on all issues.

Personal Statement:
Why you are qualified and what particular gifts you possess for this position: I have attended two previous churchwide assemblies at which difficult topics were discussed and voted upon (social statements for abortion and death penalty; CCM). I understand the need to be informed on the topics prior to the assembly, but also the need to listen to the debate and discussions held at the assembly which can help in determining how I will vote.

Personal Statement:
Why you are qualified and what particular gifts you possess for this position: I am a life-long Lutheran, very interested in past, present and future of the church. I am especially interested in the stewardship and discipleship aspects of the church. I love the Lord and know he is working in our midst.

Betty L. Harris

Congregational Service: Current treasurer, Women of the ELCA; Sunday School board; have served as president for Women of the ELCA (2 terms); church council secretary (2 terms); Southeast Conference president (2 terms) and treasurer (2 terms); mission board committee to bring the ladies from Dodoma, Tanzania two summers ago; sing in choir and taught Sunday School

Synodical or Churchwide Service: Have been a delegate to NW Synod convention two times

Community-Related Service: Service person for our church if a disaster strikes our area

Personal Statement:
Why you are qualified and what particular gifts you possess for this position: I know what is happening in the ELCA by keeping up with materials and news articles, etc. given in different areas of the church. Being a Lutheran all of my life I know what the Bible tells us and our Lutheran heritage. It hasn’t changed from the beginning nor now either.

Why you are qualified and what particular gifts you possess for this position: I believe I am qualified to serve in this capacity because I am willing to serve and have great faith in my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I have served the ELCA at the synodical, conference and local levels. Also served in the previous body as treasurer for South Pacific District ALCW. I keep current with the churchwide, synod, and conference happenings and news.

Congregational Service: Served as administrative assistant at St. Paul for 28 years; served as mission growth vice president and president of Women of the Church; as administrative assistant I have served on church council as a nonvoting member; former Sunday School teacher

Synodical or Churchwide Service: Delegate for NW Ohio Synodical Women in St. Louis 1999; served as newsletter editor for the women’s synodical board; delegate for NW Ohio Synod Assembly 6 times

Community-Related Service: Board member of the Christian Food Center serving all of Wyandot County; council person for the Village of Harpster; volunteer coordinator for weekday religious education in the Upper Sandusky school district

Personal Statement:
Why you are qualified and what particular gifts you possess for this position: I serve as administrative assistant for St. Paul, Upper Sandusky (28 years). I have been a delegate 6 times for the synod assemblies and a delegate to the Women of the Church National Assembly once. I feel this experience is beneficial if I am elected for the national convention.

Personal Statement:
Why you are qualified and what particular gifts you possess for this position: Being deeply committed to service in lay ministry I would like the opportunity to serve as a voting member at the churhwide assembly. These are critical times in the life of the ELCA. We must be prepared to listen to all and be prepared through prayer and meditation for God’s help and in working through the agenda of the assembly. Our study assignment to “Journey Together Faithfully” is currently being used at Emanuel and is an excellent resource to equip us for the task ahead.
