Lutheran Campus Ministry At The University of Toledo

What do hammers, free dinners and brooms bound with duct tape have in common? You can find them all at Lutheran Campus Ministry (LCM) at the University of Toledo!

LCM at UT partners with Toledo Campus Ministry (an ecumenical protestant organization) to provide joint ministry on campus that focuses on God’s grace, Christian unity, fellowship, service and faith development.

On Sunday evenings, we offer an ecumenical protestant worship service at the student union, which incorporates various styles of worship from the mainline traditions, with student-led vocal and instrumental ensembles. On Wednesday nights we share a meal prepared by local congregation members, followed by a Bible study and a small communion worship in our chapel.

Other activities include service projects within the community (e.g. Habitat for Humanity), as well as social events like broomball and the spring semi-formal. Often, we collaborate with other groups on campus, such as the Catholic Student Association or the University YMCA.Alternative Spring Break

Ministry takes place in an atmosphere of welcome and open questioning. We believe in challenging students to articulate their faith, as well as grow and widen their vision of it. One of the finest opportunities for this kind of growth is the annual Alternative Spring Break. Instead of the typical collegiate spring break activities, campus ministry offers several service/learning trips each year, where participants are encouraged to experience new cultures/settings and offer their time and service there. In past years, we have explored and served from Mexico to New York City, from Madison to Miami, in building projects, urban service, and spiritual formation.

The campus ministry is staffed by two full time and one part time pastor. Rev. Wendy Sherer serves as the Lutheran Campus Pastor, along with Rev. Dee Baker (ecumenical protestant), and Rev. Collins Asonye (Episcopal – part time).

Seder mealStudents are encouraged to participate in campus ministry at every level, especially in planning worship and other events. Reaching out to friends and other students who may be looking for a spiritual connection on campus is a main priority. We also connect with the Toledo community, with students and pastors regularly attending worship at local churches, sharing music and stories of campus ministry. Additionally, we heartily welcome community members to join in our campus activities whenever possible. This important intersection keeps us connected to the Church at large, as well as making it possible for our ministry to continue.
