Lent Starts On Feb. 9 This Year

LentBelow are resources as you begin to prepare for Lent next month:

“Gathered by God's Grace: Lent from Around the World” is the title of the all-new Lenten resource for congregations from ELCA’s Division for Global Mission. Each week’s materials include a sermon written by a missionary, suggestions for worship, bulletin covers, supper suggestions and global mission resources. A bulletin insert you can use to publicize the series is also provided.

This year, we will follow the book "A Portrait of Jesus" by Joseph F. Girzone (author of "Joshua"). Based on the book's 16 chapters, he has selected the following themes:

Feb. 9 Ash Wednesday: "Jesus, Bringer of Good News"
Feb. 16 Lent Wednesday 2 "Jesus, Humble Savior"
Feb. 23 Lent Wednesday 3 "Jesus, Gentle Shepherd"
March 2 Lent Wednesday 4 "Jesus, Source of Freedom"
March 9 Lent Wednesday 5 "Jesus, Bearer of Gifts"
March 16 Lent Wednesday, 6 "Jesus Forgiving Savior"
March 23 Maundy Thursday "Jesus, Person of Passion"

During the week before each sermon, he will write short summaries of the topic with some questions for group discussion and personal reflection. Members are welcome to add thoughts, ideas, illustrations, etc.

You're invited to join this meeting for preaching or for your personal Lenten devotions. If you would like to join this meeting, send a message to ecu-invitations@ecunet.org with LENT 2005 SERMON SERIES in the subject line.

What Is Lent?
A one-page description of the penitential liturgical season is just one of many items for individuals, leaders and congregations in an updated Lenten resources page. Traditionally, Christians have observed the season with prayer, fasting and charity, and all are represented in the resources to enhance public worship and private devotion developed by staff of various units and expressions of the ELCA.
