Northwestern Ohio Synod Council Response
to the Report and Recommendations of the
Task Force for the ELCA Study on Sexuality

The Northwestern Ohio Synod Council wishes to thank the Task Force for the ELCA Studies on Sexuality. As our counsel to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Church Council, we would offer the following recommendations:

First, we affirm the sentiment of Recommendation 1, yet we would suggest this change of wording which we view as a more positive approach:

Because of the God-given mission and communion we share in Christ, be it resolved that this church is willing to embrace the commitment to continue mutually respectful dialogue on the issues of human sexuality while seeking to remain engaged in mission together as the ELCA.  We note, however, that this will not be easy, as the issue before us does not represent a mere disagreement. For many faithful people, it cuts to the core, touching on issues of scriptural interpretation and application; the law-gospel paradigm; cheap vs. costly grace; and our baptisms, in which we are unconditionally accepted by God and yet also called by Him to walk in the newness of life.

Second, we affirm the Conference of Bishop’s 1993 statement:  We recognize and understand that there is basis neither in scripture nor tradition for the establishment of an official ceremony by this church for the blessing of a homosexual relationship. We, therefore, do not approve such a ceremony as an official action of this church’s ministry. Nevertheless, we express trust in and will continue dialogue with those pastors and congregations who are in ministry with gay and lesbian persons, and affirm their desire to explore the best ways to provide pastoral care for all to whom they minister.

Third, we support an amendment to Recommendation 3 which would read:

The Task Force for ELCA Studies on Sexuality recommends that the ELCA continue under the standards regarding sexual conduct for pastoral leaders as set forth in “Visions and Expectations” and “Definitions and Guidelines for Discipline.”

Finally, we recommend that any action taken at the 2005 Churchwide Assembly in regard to any Sexuality Task Force recommendations be passed by a 2/3rds vote.
