  • Pastor Denise Brown, chaplain at Filling Memorial Home of Mercy, Napoleon, competed in five events at the Masters World Swimming Championships held in Riccione, Italy. She placed second in the 400- and 800-meter freestyle, third in the 200-meter freestyle and the 400-meter individual medley, and fourth in the 200-meter individual medley. Congratulations!

  • Pastor Howard Abts, interim minister at Glenwood, Toledo, was recently featured in the ELCA Board of Pensions Fall 2004 newsletter for physical and spiritual wellness. Abts is an avid cyclist, saying that “It has become a part of my life.” Abts began bicycle commuting as a college student in 1971 after selling his car and motorcycle to pay bills. Bicycle commuting year round, he has never had to deal with frozen locks or a dead battery. “Riding my bike has made me healthier than I would probably be otherwise,” Abts adds. “I have a responsibility to God to care for my body,” he said. To read more of Abts’ story, visit www.elcaforwellness.org.

  • Noteworthy Necessities – from The Lutheran, December 2004 – St. Peter, Edon congregational member Emily Curtis, one of the mothers of a West Point graduate, organized Operation Support Our Troops. The objective of this group is to send needed items and other sundries to troops serving away from home. With the help of family, friends and parishioners, Curtis has sent more than 20,000 pounds of items overseas.
