Anti-Racism - Acting Boldly in a Racist Society

[Back]

Two operating assumptions for anti-racism presentations:

    1. In the United States we are all born into a racist society without our our permission or consent. None of us started the fire.

    2. Anti-racism reaches beyond developing sensitivities to the results by going deeper into an analysis and dismantling of racism as it exits in our society.

Three excellent videos have been used in educating about racism.

The first video was "True Colors," a ‘Prime Time Live’ presentation by Diane Sawyer in which two carefully matched young men of middle class status, one black and one white, are shown in various social and business situations. The video analyzes and compares their treatment.

A second video, "Crossroads", discussed things which improved and declined in the area of racism in our society since the sixties. The definition of racism used in this presentation was: Racism is race prejudice and power of systems and institutions.

A third video from "Frontline", considered excellent by the board, was ‘A Class Divided’, which depicts a racial discrimination teaching experiment with children and with adult.
