The World Hunger Task Force began 2003 with a World Hunger Seminar at First English Lutheran, Findlay. We were privileged to have Lita Brusick Johnson, director of the ELCA World Hunger Appeal, conduct the seminar and we gained much insight into the operation of the World Hunger programs.

We continue to pursue methods to encourage contributions to the World Hunger Appeal. At the 2002 Synod Assembly a resolution was passed to double our giving to World Hunger over the next three years or by 2005. I'm sorry to report that our congregation contributions to World Hunger Appeal have fallen $5,000 from 2002 through 2003. We will continue to pray for our congregations and suggest ways they can increase their giving to World Hunger.

World Hunger is an international relief program that not only provides food around the world, including the United States, but also works with other groups to provide education and assistance for self-sufficiency. This assistance equips people with means of providing their own food as well as procuring an income to pull them from the disaster of poverty. World Hunger Appeal is the best way to spend your hunger contributions because of its low cost of raising funds (7 percent) as compared to most other agencies at 25 percent or more.

One of our two biggest goals for the task force is to create a network of individuals from each of our congregations to be a part of the World Hunger program, so they may carry the message and provide the educational information to their congregation. Our second goal is to educate and provide programs to encourage contributions to the World Hunger Appeal and to meet our 2002 synod resolution to double our contributions by 2005.
